Golf travel films, six years in
Sticks Golf Research puts its mission in one line: "We exist to tell Original golf stories." The channel calls its work High Golf IQ Films, and it was started by Trey Wren, a former college golfer who wanted to make golf travel films for YouTube.
In 2020 he bought a camera and started working toward that, and the channel joined YouTube on July 10, 2020. Six years in, it has 12,900 subscribers, 63 videos and more than 850,000 views. The channel's website now calls it a media outlet and production company, inspired by surf and snowboard films.
The most watched video is Landmand, a 24 hour film about a full day at Landmand in Homer, Nebraska, at about 147,000 views. Next are A Week With the NCAA National Champion Golf Team, at about 94,000, and A Week With Clemson Golf, at about 83,000.
What you get is slow, well shot golf travel. Strike Mission is the flagship show, where Trey takes a crew he calls sticks to places in golf with real culture, competition and architecture, and tells the story of the places and people they meet. Episodes so far include Charleston, Sand Valley, Kingsley Club and Abaco. There are also documentaries, like Let's Build a Golf Park, and Extra Holes shorts, like one on Pinehurst No. 2.
We featured them on October 20 for Strike Mission: Lowcountry. The crew spent a few days at Palmetto Bluff, near Hilton Head in South Carolina, and played May River, a Jack Nicklaus design, and Anson Point, a new course by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, soon after it opened. In the description they say May River surprised them.
